Action Plan

In the event of a disaster such as a major earthquake, take care of yourself first,

then your loved ones and your home.

From our gathering site we will organize immediate and longer-term neighborhood assistance.

Our goal is to provide the “greatest good for the greatest number.”

Immediate Response

Our immediate response plan incorporates protocols developed by Washington State’s Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) program and by the Community Emergency Response Team organized by the City of Eugene.

You can view a detailed copy of our Action Plan here.

First take action at home (MYN):

  • Protect your head, feet, and hands.

  • Take care of loved ones.

  • Check natural gas or propane. Shut off if necessary (hearing gas hiss, smelling gas, or seeing spinning meter dials).

  • Shut off water at the house main. (We can help, if needed.)

  • Place a HELP or OK sign in your front window.

  • Put a fire extinguisher on the sidewalk.

Then take action with neighbors (CERT):

  • Gather at Rebecca’s carport (across from 2550 Onyx).

  • Set up the ‘Base’ operation by retrieving our supplies (radios, map, whiteboards, triage and medical bags, etc.) from the PETER box and Rebecca’s shed attached to the carport.

  • Start gathering information about the condition of the neighborhood from people arriving at the Base.

  • Send out Triage teams to check the status of each house in the neighborhood.

  • Send Medical teams to locations identified as needing medical assistance.

  • Set up the Care Center at Nancy’s house (2456 Onyx).

  • Monitor the status of people and neighborhood infrastructure.

In the 72 hours following the disaster event we will:

  • Monitor community Emergency Response channels for information and keep neighbors apprised.

  • Organize volunteers; assign tasks to those willing and able to help.

  • Assess neighborhood safety; check the structural integrity of homes, ensure that gas lines and water lines are shut off, and put out any fires that occur.

  • Set up and staff a medical center.

  • Assemble latrines.

  • Organize the food/kitchen center.

  • Monitor physical and emotional well-being of neighbors.

  •

First 72 Hours

Our 3 day plan is meant to ensure that everyone has access to adequate shelter, food, water, sanitation, and medical help while we gather our bearings after the event.

2 Week Plan

Emergency planners want us to be ready to fend for ourselves for 2 weeks in the aftermath of a major disaster, such as an earthquake. We cannot expect any outside help for this period because of the broad impact on relief efforts across the Northwest.

In the two weeks following the disaster we will:

  • Ensure everyone has shelter, food, and water.

  • Check on everyone’s mental/emotional state.

  • Monitor relief efforts being implemented by State and Federal agencies.

  • Reach out to surrounding neighbors to access and offer help.

  • Establish communication with the outside world to relay information about the status of neighbors.
